A well-known example of bias in AI involved a tech firm that developed an AI tool for vetting resumes. The tool was trained on data from past applicants to determine what made a “good” hire. The catch was that the company’s workforce was predominantly male, leading the AI to assume that being female was a negative trait. Since AI doesn’t have a contextual understanding of the world and simply identifies patterns, it can’t consciously correct these errors. 

This is another example where human intervention is invaluable; if humans are reviewing the results produced by AI, biases creeping into the workplace become a lot less likely. Organizations have a moral responsibility to eliminate algorithmic biases and prioritize humans.

Privacy

A poll by the Pew Research Center revealed that many Americans who know about AI are worried about how companies might use it. Especially after seeing the popularity of ChatGPT, they’re apprehensive. In fact, 81% expressed concerns about potential misuse of their data, while 80% were worried about their data being used in ways they didn’t intend.

So, how can we ensure that the data collected is used responsibly and ethically?

AI is already proving its power to transform our work and life, but it’s crucial to tread carefully. Whenever you use AI software, consider the information you’re giving it very thoughtfully. Keep in mind that once you input data into an AI tool, it could potentially be accessed by anyone on the internet. It’s an open model online, so steer clear of sharing sensitive or proprietary data.

We need to establish clear guidelines and regulations for the use of AI in learning. This includes implementing robust data protection measures and conducting regular audits to ensure compliance.

Using AI in learning in a way that is ethical and secure
