June is Pride Month, a celebration for the LGBTQIA+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning, intersex and asexual and/or ally). Pride is best known for its colorful parades but it’s also a time to highlight and address the discrimination that LGBTQIA+ folk still face.
Catalyst surveyed LGBTQIA+ employees and reported that in 2021, over half are still hearing offensive jokes in the workplace. Many protect themselves by hiding their sexual orientation or gender identity. A fifth have experienced discrimination when applying for jobs.
On the flip side, 25% of respondents say they stayed in a job because of the LGBTQ-inclusive work environment. There’s still work to be done and performative rainbow-washing won’t cut it, so we’re sharing actionable resources on how to be a true ally in and outside of work.
